Of all the seabirds in Alaska, tufted puffins are the most common, often seen in marine waters near shore, offshore and in bays.  Their wings propel them under water and the large bill, which sheds its outer layer in the late summer, helps them catch food. Small projections and grooves on the roof of the mouth and tongue grip the food while the puffin chases more fish.

Von allen Meeresv÷geln Alaskas ist der Papageientaucher der am meisten verbreitetste und man findet ihn in den GewΣssern in der NΣhe des Ufers, an der KüEte und in Buchten. Mit ihren FlüEeln treiben sie sich beim Tauchen an und mit dem gro▀en Schnabel, dessen Σu▀ere Schicht sich im SpΣtsommer hΣutet, fangen sie ihre Nahrung. Kleine Furchen am Gaumen und auf der Zunge dienen zum Festhalten der Nahrung, wΣhrend der Papageientaucher noch mehr Fische jagt.
